Frequently Asked Questions

What is counselling?

For a short video about counselling by the professional body in Scotland, see video at the bottom of this page.

What happens in an assessment session?

This is an optional 30-40 minute meeting in which we can both decide if it feels right to work together.

You will be able to see my facilities and I can explain the process of counselling and the way that I work. You will be able to briefly discuss what brings you to counselling and what you feel you need.

You are able to opt to have this assessment session over the telephone or via Zoom.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your reasons for coming to counselling. A few sessions may be enough to support you through a difficult time. Or perhaps you may have issues that could benefit from a long term open ended counselling relationship. Ultimately how many sessions you have is your decision.

How much does it cost?

An individual session for all age groups is £60 per hour.

For couple therapy my fee is £70 per hour.

My fee for counselling supervision is £60 per hour, or £90 per 90 minutes (minimum requirements for BACP members) I am able to offer concessions for counselling students.

Face to face, Zoom, or telephone

Please enquire about rates for group supervision. I am able to offer a concessionary rate if you are unwaged or have a low income.

If you would like me to come to you, my mileage fee (calculated at 60p per mile from Stathern to your address) will be included on top of my hourly fee.

Will I have to sign a contract?

I will ask you to read and sign a working agreement if we decide to work together. This will inform you of exactly what you can expect from counselling and my service.

However you are not commiting to a certain number of sessions and are free to end sessions at any point.

What happens in a counselling session?

In person centred counselling the focus is on the personal relationship between the counsellor and the client. In this relationship, as trust and understanding develops, the  client is increasingly more able to explore their thoughts, feelings and emotions in a confidential environment with the support of the counsellor.

Often a client/counsellor relationship is built through talking. However I am happy to work creatively using art materials or symbols such as sand tray, stones, clay, russian dolls, puppets, poetry and story telling, or feelings cards. Children and young people often like to express themselves more creatively.

I can incorporate mindfulness techniques and guided meditations into sessions if desired. I am very flexible in the way that I work and would welcome your ideas for working together.
